Brendan Hunt says Ted Lasso has no official season 5 renewal or writers room, despite earlier reports of planning.
The 56-minute finale moves Roy to Chelsea, elevates Alice Chilton and gives Rebecca majority ownership of Richmond. For U.S. viewers following the renewal buzz, the key distinction is between reported planning and an officially greenlit season.
The season 4 finale is titled "Being Alive". It was originally listed as "The Departing Lass", but the title was changed to "Being Alive" a few weeks earlier, Hunt said, in a decision made entirely by Jason Sudeikis.
Richmond passes the torch to its women's team
Roy Kent, played by Brett Goldstein, quits the AFC Richmond men's team in the finale to take the helm of Chelsea. Alice Chilton, played by Tanya Reynolds, is promoted to head coach of the women's team on Ted's recommendation, with Ted and Coach Beard as her assistants.
They got promoted in the second to last episode, and then the win in the last episode is that they sold out. So the results of the game itself better than that.
Hunt said the appearance of the men's players in the last episode was intended to symbolize the men handing the torch to the women.
The finale also gives Rebecca 51% ownership of Richmond after Zelda's henchman Hugo switches sides and secures the Milk sisters' shares for her, alongside Mae's 2% left to Rebecca in her will. Ted tells his son Henry about his father's suicide, and Rebecca spontaneously proposes to her long-term boyfriend Matthijs in her office.
Season 5 remains unconfirmed
Hunt said there has been no official word on a season 5 renewal and that no writers room has started. "Well, then that’s news to me. I certainly hope it happens, and I’m optimistic, but yeah, haven’t heard anything official yet. It would be nice though."
Earlier reporting also said the season had not been ordered, while a July 2026 report described a possible plan for the Lasso team to return to the writers room in late August to map out a not-yet-ordered season 5.
The future of Roy and Keeley is also unsettled. Hunt said there was no expectation of losing the characters, but Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple are both very busy, so the finale built in flexibility.
He said, "We have no idea. We don’t know if we’re coming back, and when we come back, we don’t know what’s going to be going on in their lives. But yeah, they’re both really busy. So yeah, the wiggle room."
Reynolds said she did not know where Alice could end up in a potential fifth season, but expressed interest in a flashback to the characters' Arsenal days: "We have no idea. There’s obviously so much potential, so many possibilities…"
