Santa Monica Studio delayed God of War Laufey to May 20, 2027 from February 16, giving the PlayStation 5 exclusive three months of extra development time.
In a social media post, Santa Monica Studio said the schedule had changed so the team could make final improvements and bring the game closer to its full potential.
The May release moves the game into a quieter spring window, away from a packed early-year slate, while Sony's own Until Dawn 2 launches on January 28. The delay means Sony will have a first-party release during the spring quarter of 2027.
Faye takes centre stage
Players control Faye, a new playable protagonist who is the legendary Frost Giant warrior and Kratos' late wife. God of War Laufey is a PlayStation 5 exclusive officially revealed in June during PlayStation's State of Play, with a 20-minute gameplay presentation, the studio said.
Shortly before the events of the 2018 God of War story, Faye dies, setting the modern saga in motion. In Laufey, she returns to consciousness after dying and faces a journey through the gods' afterlife, known as the Everywhen.
Actress Deborah Ann Woll provides Faye's voice and motion capture. The game will include a character described as a talking jelly cube.
Addressing the shift
Fans reacted in different ways to the game's reveal, and some criticised the absence of Kratos as the playable lead. Santa Monica Studio game director Ariel Lawrence said she understands the scepticism.
totally unbothered
In July, Santa Monica Studio's Cory Barlog said a subsequent God of War game starring Kratos would follow God of War Laufey and tie into its story. Santa Monica Studio has also said that God of War Laufey will be available on disc.
The broader God of War universe
Former wrestler and Hollywood star Dave Bautista will play Kratos in a TV series drawn from the games, which is in production. The studio thanked the community for its excitement for Faye's journey through the Everywhen and promised to share more updates soon.
