Rockstar Games says its next project will not require another eight-year development cycle thanks to new infrastructure.
The studio argues that foundational changes and a doubled workforce now allow for quicker iteration. This approach relies on the systems created for its upcoming flagship title.
The engine, the tools and the team we've built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly
GTA 6 arrives eight years after Rockstar's previous major release, Red Dead Redemption 2. That game launched in 2018.

- November 19GTA 6 Launch Game is set to launch after being postponed from May 26, 2026.
The game was originally announced for a 2025 release. It was later pushed to May 26, 2026, before settling on its current November 19 date.
As you know, occasionally across our entire company, including 2K and our mobile business, at times more time is required to polish a title to ensure that it's released in its best possible form. And of course it'll release in the same fiscal year as the prior date.
Leadership views GTA 6 as a foundation for faster content creation. They believe the current project enables a new pace of work.
I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content.
Hooker expressed confidence in this new development approach. He believes the studio can expand its offerings without starting from scratch each time.
We foundationally changed a lot of stuff on this project
But now it's done, and we're not going to rip it apart.
Rockstar more than doubled its workforce for this project. The expansion supports the technical demands of the new engine.
- 2,441Employees in 2018
- 4,711Employees in 2026
The studio had 4,711 staff in 12 offices by 2026. Development and QA accounted for 4,020 of these roles, with 690 in publishing. This figure is higher than the 2,441 employees on staff when Red Dead Redemption 2 launched.
Publishing head Jennifer Kolbe recalled discussing the delays with the CEO. She described his initial reaction to the news.
I think he said, 'You're kidding. Please tell me you're kidding.' But once we talked through why, he got it.
And I think we are really lucky that he is as reasonable as he is, because a lot of people would say, 'You'd just better figure out how to ship it.' And we have been really, really lucky that we have not found ourselves in that place, because that happens to a lot of teams, and we've all played those games. It's not great.
Zelnick said he prioritized quality over speed and was not worried about delay impacts.
At the end of the day it's our responsibility to do the right thing for our consumers, and that means delivering the best possible entertainment experience.
The studio faced major leaks in September 2022. A network intrusion resulted in 90 in-development video clips being shared.

It feels like somebody's wading through your dirty washing. It's like they're inside your head,
You see your early work out there. Nobody's ever supposed to see that. It's really weirdly invasive. And so it's quite hard to deal with on an emotional level.
Remote work was eliminated in April 2024 to heighten security. The move aimed to reduce the risk of further breaches.
The idea that we would have the game in that many environments is something that I think the security team would not love,
I think if we did not have a game that people wanted to steal as much, maybe it would be an easier conversation.
Another hacker group is currently threatening further leaks. The group began circulating footage in August.
Threats include releasing the full build if demands are not met. This includes the story mode.
Bloomberg compares this era to the quick GTA 3 to Vice City cycle. That sequel launched a year after the original in 2002.
Rockstar has not hinted at what the next specific game will be. The studio remains silent on its future roadmap.
Fans widely expect a Red Dead Redemption sequel. Speculation remains high despite the lack of official confirmation.
Co-founder Dan Houser suggested RDR3 would probably happen. He made the comment a year ago.
I'm certain we will see Red Redemption 3 one day
When that will be — I have absolutely no idea. Don't count on Arthur's involvement either. His story has been told, I feel.
Yeah, that got really picked up! I would have thought that was obvious though. Wouldn't you? And it's not like I have any insider information whatsoever, but of course there's going to be another Red Dead. It sold over 60 million copies!
Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two said it himself. He said GTA and Red Dead are prominent franchises for Rockstar Games and that they will be returning to them in the future. So there's no doubt there will be another Red Dead. But if Arthur Morgan will be involved? I highly doubt it, to be honest. And I think it's going to be quite some time before we even see a snifter of anything new Red Dead related. I have no idea how it would pan out, but I wouldn't bet on Arthur being a part of it.
Jack Black said he was interested in playing a character in RDR3.
Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place around the turn of the century, right?
There was a character around that time named Jack Black, who wrote an autobiography called You Can't Win. I would kinda like to play Jack Black in Red Dead Redemption 3.
